Kubik is the electronic music project of Victor Afonso, a musician from Guarda with over 20 years of musical experience (rock, improvisation, experimental, electronic). Graduated in Music Education and multi-instrumentalist, Victor Afonso developed multiple creative projects in a melting pot of genres, aesthetic fragmentation of stylistic metamorphoses, with a strong influence of the cinematic imagination: electronic manipulation, free-rock, jazz, hip-hop, ambient, world music, “cartoons” music… Kubik has been around for 14 years, and has been recognised by 4 Maqueta Awards in 1999; was the musical revelation for Público newspaper in 2001. Kubik has three critically acclaimed albums that were included in the lists of the best Portuguese albums of the year – “Musique Oblique” (2001), “Metamorphosia” (2005) and “Jazz Psicotic Hall“ (2011). It also has 15 other tracks scattered around other records. In May 2004, American musician Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantômas), fond of Kubic’s music, invited him to play in the first part of the Fantômas concert in Aula Magna (Lisbon). He has played and presented his projects in many international electronic music festivals, Casa da Música, Theatre St. George, ZDB, Fnac network, Paredes de Coura, Viriato Theatre, Portalegre Performing Arts Center, ACERT, Évora, Auditorium Barcelos, Montemor-o-Novo, Cine-Teatro Castelo Branco Avenue, Municipal Theatre of Guarda, Póvoa de Varzim Auditorium, Sines Arts Centre, Santo Tirso, Moagem Fundão, Film Society of Viseu, etc. Kubik also collaborated with many musicians (Adolfo Luxúria Canibal, Old Jerusalem, NORTON, Bypass, Factor Activo, Américo Rodrigues, César Prata, Carlos Zíngaro, Nuno Rebelo…) and remixed songs for numerous national and international collections. He also composed soundtracks for four silent films (“Un Chien Andalou” by Luis Buñuel, “Entr’acte” by René Clair, “Happiness” of Medvedkin and “Romance Sentimentel” by Sergei Eisenstein), contemporary dance (Culturgest, choreography Joclécio Azevedo), multiple theatre plays, exhibitions, short films, sound poetry, recitals of spoken-word and performance. He has also worked in sound modelling and sound-design in various projects. Victor Afonso / Kubik is the creator of the “Movie Poster” (2012), commissioned by the “Escrita na Paisagem” festival: music for 250 historical movie posters, with more than 10 presentations around the country.
